Fishing Reports

12/4/10
Got a call around noon from Capt. Danny Wray for an afternoon trip. Packed up the rods and headed down. Got a really late start and with only 2 hours of fishing and shooting some video we managed 7 reds an lost a few more. Will post pics and video once I get them. Not bad for throwing together a quick afternoon trip before a front. Flies used were an all gold charlie, chart/white clouser, and a shrimp pattern. All in all had a great afternoon.

Made a quick trip to the pond behind my parents house.  After tying some new flies I decided to give them a test drive.  As I figured, they worked just like clock work.  Caught 4 fish, 1 bass and 3 perch.  Posted the 2 pics I took in the photos section.  The slow sink rate of these flies just makes a fish want to kill these flies.  Can't wait to put them to the test in City Park against the Rios in New Orleans.

Lou Gros and Cosby Chaney made the trip to Basson's in the canoes.  They were greated by high water.  Lou managed to boat 4 reds ranging from 25 to 18 inches and releasing 1.  Cosby caught and release 2 under sized reds as well.  All fish were caught on an all Gold Charlie that they keep giving me all the credit on that Lou calls Redfish Robert.  I simply call it Goldie Locks.  Here is a pic of the fly.  If you want to learn how to tie this fly let me know it is very simple.

Recieved a report from Lou Gros who fished with his father in the Upper Dularge area this morning.  They were fishing with poppers and clousers that produce several fish and exciting strikes on the topwater.  They ended the day before noon with 9 reds and 10 bass.  They found clean water early in the morning which turned dirty quick when the wind picked up.  Also while Lou was visiting Gluf Shores he had some hot action on the Spanish Mackerel in the surf on the fly rod.  "El Diablo" can be a very fun fish, but can also tear up some tackle. The fishing is on so get out there and get in on the action.

Fishing has been good in the area.  Solid reports of lots of redfish and even some trout have been reported in the Pointe Aux Chenes area.  A recent trip to Dularge for myself and a friend resulted in 8 reds before 10:00 am.  Also a report from Ricky Turner on an afternoon report resulted in a quick limit of reds in a 2 hour span from the Dulac area.  Low water and outgoing tides can be dificult to navigate in the marsh area.  Be careful of your water depths as they can change quickly leaving you stranded.  In the mean time get out there and catch some fish.

LA Dept. of Wildlife & Fisheries opening up just about all of Cocodrie and Dularge it gave me a chance to chase some reds with the long stick . Received several reports of hundreds of trout coming from the Coon Point area. So I tried to get there to catch some of those speckled critters. As I arrived at the Gulf I notice a storm developing offshore so I decided not to try and make the long run. Tried for some trout along the coast but no luck. Stopped by my big Drum hole and there were a few in there but no monsters to chase for any records. I then moved to what I call my redfish paradise hole. Sorry guy’s but the location will remain as my “Location X”. Been fishing this spot since 2002 and have never ever seen another boat here. It feels like my little private area. Anyway starter down the bank to the cove in the back and threw my Dularge candy (Chart./White Clouser) in the back and Wham…..first fish. Small fish 18”, put it in the box. Looked up and noticed the school in the next cove.  I slowly eased up and within a minute I hooked up with a big red. Tried to keep him quiet to prevent him from spooking the other fish and was successful. Put that fish in the box.  The action continued for a while catching, tagging and releasing a few more big ones. Ended the day with 8 total kept 4 and tagged 3 of them, a 27.5” @ 8lbs., 28” @ 8lbs., 30.5” @ 10lbs.  The storm that was brewing offshore finally caught up to me and ran me off. Also shot some video as well.

Sorry for the shakyness but hard to hold the camera and prepare for the next fish. Tried to get the money shot with a red busting a popper but they must have known I had the camera running cause they just wouldn’t work with me.  It was a great Daddy’s Day trip for me and it sure was nice to be back on the water again.

Tried to sneak out and field test this batch of jitterbees and san juan worms.  Tied on the jitterbee and on the first cast the perch nailed it.  Tried a little bit more but the rain, lightning, hail & wind ran me off.  Not to mention it was the middle of the day.  Hopefully I will get to do some further testing here soon.

Fished this morning with 2 members of the Fin-Addict Fly Fishers: Cosby Chaney, Lou Gros. Beautiful weather and little wind. Great for the fly right, well with no tide moving the fish just would not eat. I managed to catch 1 big 26.5" red weighing 8lbs. on the boga. Lou managed to boat 2 reds one 26" only weighing 6lbs. and another 16.5" red. Cosby did hook up but broke off. Had several chances at a few more reds and 2 sheepshead but they just were not feeding. Called it quits around noon. Met up with Joe Kahler and Mike Lafleur with the Red Stick Fly Fishers at the cars and they didn't have any luck. There were also 2 other guys there before us and left before we finished and they were skunked as well.

Had the chance to break-in the new TFO 3wt. on Friday.  This is my new favorite rod.  Caught about 12 fish.  Mixed bag of perch and bass. The smallest fish will bend this rod.  Had a little trouble casting poppers on it, but could have been the wind playing a factor with it also.  Everything was caught on a white or a chartruse small popper.  It is fun to watch fish blow up on top water.  Just can't wait to see it on a Redfish. here's a few photo's the rest are in the photo gallery.

Ricky Turner had a chance to slip away from the office yesterday morning for a little fishing. The tide range didn’t look too good, but it was good enough. The best time to go fishin’ is when you can. I ran down to the spot where I usually catch a few trout no matter what time of the year it is. As expected the trout were nowhere to be found. This year has been very unusual to say the least for trout. This season they didn’t show up like they do during their annual migration in from the beach area. I fished for about 45 minutes with a super spook and had 4 slaps at it but no hookups. Left there and went to a shallow pond off of wonder lake that I hadn’t been in since last summer. The action was Hot & Heavy as soon as I turned the corner from the main canal. The reds were moving on both sides of the pond when I entered from the cut, I couldn’t decide which side to fish first. The wind was probably 5 mph out of the SW so I picked the slick calm side to the northeast. I went to the left and found a huge school of fish all were in the 6 – 8 lb. range, but were acting rather lethargic. The only ones that were tracking were the smaller ones. The first hookup was with my TFO 6wt. on a gold & red spoon fly. After playing with those until the school became skittish, I went to the right and that is where the mother lode was hanging out. I eased down the bank with my trolling motor barley on not to spook the fish. I noticed they were running out from the bottom of the boat in all directions. After about 200 yards I finally found some fish cruising the bank. I laid the fly in front of him and it was on. He darted under my boat as the fly line ended up around the shaft of the trolling motor. I let a little slack out in the line to release the motor and pick it up to land the fish when he decided to make another run. My tip section of my TFO 6wt. was now in three pieces. I managed to get the motor up and fought the fish to the boat and land him. This one measured at 26 ½ at 8 lbs. The next cove had just as many fish if not more. I picked up my Orvis 8wt. and tried a black & chartreuse clouser, but they wanted nothing to do with it. I got the spoon fly off my now broken 6wt. and caught a 16 ½ inch fish on the first cast. They would chase the clouser, but just wouldn’t eat it. I moved from there after the little fish spooked about 8 giant reds out of that area that were just lying up and not moving. I landed 5 more fish that were in the 26 ½ to 31 inch range. The 31" fish was spotted cruising straight towards the boat ahead of me as I was stalking some smaller fish that were feeding on the bank. The wind by this time had become nonexistent. This fish was making a beeline to my boat at a pretty good clip. I waited till he was about 40’ from the boat & laid the spoon fly to the left side of him and a little long. I made a couple rapid strips to catch up to him causing the spoon fly to break the surface in front of him. This fish came completely out of the water with mouth open for this fly and inhaled it. Had a 20 minute battle and finally got this beast in my paws. It was the biggest red that I had ever landed on the fly rod. Just an awesome trip by myself, I had no one to take pictures. I managed to snap a few with my camera phone. Not the best, but good enough to enjoy the memory.

Fished the Pointe-Aux-Chene area for the IFA Kayak Tournament.  Dispite high winds I did manage to find some clean and clear water.  I successfully caught 1 Speckled Trout and 6 Reds.  Lost a few more right at the boat but that fishing.  I did manage to tag all 6 reds before taking a photo and releasing them.  Had tons of fun and managed to finish 3rd in the event.  Danny Wray also fished the event in the Grand Isle area and managed a few fish as well.  He finished in the 6th spot for the event.  The Fin-Addict Fly Fishers put a strong showing.  Can't wait to get back on the water again.

Ricky Turner fished the Point-aux-chene area Thursday morning and caught 3 nice reds on the spoon fly.  Very good conditions and plenty of redfish in the Point-aux-chene area right now.  I plan on hitting that area Sunday for the IFA kayak tour event.  Hope the wind gets out of here so I can get my fish on.

Ricky Turner fished the Dulac area on Sunday and hooked up and caught 3 Reds all were caught on a Spoon Fly.  Very calm winds and clean water, oh yeah and the water is back up to normal down there.  Also The Point-Aux-Chene area has been hot also.  A report from my father and brother-in-law that fished the area on Sunday did very well.  They caught close to 20 reds fishing in very clean and clear water.  Key there was fishing the mullet.  The Speckled Trout on the other hand have been and still are somewhat no where to be found.  Hope it changes soon.

Tried my luck at my parents house and the perch bite is still slow.  Managed to catch about 5 perch and one very small bass.  He must have been very hungry considering he was the size of my pinkie finger.  With spring here hopefully the bite will start to increase and I can have some fun with the 4wt. and some poppin' bugs.

Ricky Turner fished with Capt. Danny Wray with Calm Water Charters in Grand Isle on what was perfect conditions for fly fishing.  Low tide, slick calm, kayak fly rodding and plenty of redfish.  They caught several redfish and shot alot of video.  They called it quits well before noon on what was probably the best Fly Fishing Day of the Year.  Check out the video section for the proof.  The redfish in Grand Isle are stacked up and waiting for flies.  If you are interested in fly fishing from a kayak and don't own one but are interested in buying one give Capt. Danny Wray a call at (225)721-8182 or (225)921-8459 and also check out his website http://www.calmwatercharters.net/ and book him for a charter trip kayak fly rodding style.

Woke up this morning to a cold one. Checked the weather channel and it was showing 32 degrees and then I check the temp for Fourchon and it was showing 10 degrees warmer than at the house. Loaded up the new yak and headed down LA1 to the TPH. Noticed that there were 2 boats in the Rabalias hole so I stay on corse to the TPH and as I arrived I was greated by a few boats that were already in the hole. The water was clean and very clear, roughly a 13 mph wind. I unloaded the new yak and was rigging my rods which I started out with an all black clouser with a touch of silver flash on intermediate line which produced nothing. I also had my other 7wt rigged with a small dark brown with a little white trim under a vosi and that produced nothing also. I also threw a spoon fly and it produced nothing hoping to blind side a red or two while watching another guy 50 yards from me catch a few reds on larsh. I then searched through the box and decided to tie on a rattle clouser that Catch Cormier had posted as a fly of the month on http://www.laflyfish.com/ in blue and white. It was the only success I had all day producing only 3 trout about 8 inches long. I was going to tag all three of them but relized that I forgot to place the tagging kit in bag before I left this morning. Called it a day around 2:00 and headed to the house. I must say that I am very happy with this new yak. Very stable, easy to control and tracks very well with the rudder (glad I got the rudder), preformed better than what I thought in a stiff wind. Can't wait til' next time, hopefully with better results.
